Lot Description
[POLITICS]. Engraving of George Washington displayed in wood medallion from Mount Vernon.

2 1/8 in. dia. engraving featuring George Washington at center, with Mount Vernon and Washington's tomb in the background. Massachusetts, H. Barnes, 1859. Designed by H. Billings, engraved by the American Bank Note Co.

The engraving is displayed in an elaborately documented wooden medallion fashioned and crafted from the trees of Mount Vernon in 1859 by pioneering entrepreneur J. Crutchett, 3 1/4 in. dia. Partial paper label affixed on reverse provides detailed information about the medallion, which was "manufactured at the 'Mount Vernon Factory' from wood grown at Mount Vernon," and the likeness of Washington, described as a "beautiful gem." (Engraving is detached from the medallion, partial loss to paper label on reverse, which is ink stamped).
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
