Lot Description
ROBERTSON, Thomas B. (ca 1773-1828). DS ("Th. B. Robertson"). New Orleans, 15 August 1810.
15 15/16 in. 9 7/8 in., creased, with some separations to creases, some with repairs to verso, toning and staining in spots. Mostly indiscernible embossed seal affixed to lower left. Engraved seal between text "United States, Territory of Orleans" to upper portion.
Partly-printed document accomplished in manuscript, appointing "Sam. B. Davis" as a Justice of the Peace for the Parish of St. Bernard.
Thomas B. Robertson is most famous for serving as Louisiana's third governor, being elected in 1820 and serving in that capacity until resigning in 1824. Prior to his time as governor, he was appointed Secretary of the Territory of Orleans by Thomas Jefferson in 1807, serving in this capacity until 1812 when Louisiana was granted statehood. At this point, Robertson became the state's first representative in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Following his term as governor, Robertson became United States judge for the District of Louisiana, and died shortly thereafter in 1828 at White Sulphur Springs, VA.
