Lot Description
[NATIVE AMERICANS]. 50 photographs of Southwestern Indians and locations, some by MARBLE and WYETH.

13 silver gelatin prints taken by Harmon Percy Marble (1870-1945). Most photographs, which show Pueblo homes and ruins, measure approx. 5 x 7 in., with exception of once scene of the Wupatki National Monument, AZ, which measures 8 x 10 1/8 in. (toning, occasional soiling to prints). Many of the photographs are accompanied by typed notes affixed to verso with photo numbers and dates, indicating that most were taken between 1911 and 1926. Some also have typed notes by Russel Hartman, cultural anthropologist and author of Navajo Pottery, Director-Curator of Navajo Tribal Museum in Window Rock and staff scientist at the California Academy of Sciences (San Francisco).

Marble entered service as an Indian Agent in 1911 and worked at various Southwestern and Pueblo reservations. Retiring in 1926, he eventually became mayor of Las Vegas. His candid images of the Native Americans were honest portrayals of Indian life at the time.

[With:] 11 silver gelatin prints taken by William M. Wyeth (1832-1901). Most photographs measure approx. 7 5/8 x 5 3/4 in. (light toning, light occasional spotting to prints). Each with ink stamp to verso, "Photograph by W.M. Wyeth, Wyeth Hdw. Co., St. Joseph, Mo." Additional ink stamp notes that the images were enlarged by Earl. V. Lewis Co., Los Angeles. Some include inscribed captions on recto or verso. Many document the Corn Dance at San Ildefonso Pueblo in New Mexico.

[Also with:] 10 x 8 in. silver gelatin photograph showing the "Eagle Dance - Tesuque Indian Pueblo, New Mexico" (manuscript caption on verso). Ink stamp credit on verso to Pacific Photo & Art Co., San Francisco, CA. Additional ink stamp on verso, "Property of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Co." (toning, light edge and corner wear). -- 6 1/4 x 4 5/8 in. silver gelatin photograph showing a large group of Native American baskets (toning, fading to print). -- 8 x 10 in. silver gelatin photographs, each showing Native youth from Taos, New Mexico, early 20th century. Uncredited (light soiling and toning to margins). -- 22 silver gelatin photographs of New Mexico, each 10 x 8 in., documenting pueblos, churches, ruins, and the New Mexico Museum of Art, among other locations. Uncredited, ca 1910-1917. Many with penciled captions on verso (very good condition overall, some with edge and corner wear including some chipping).

Together, 50 photographs. Condition generally good.
