Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. SEDDON, James A. (1815-1880). Document signed ("James A. Seddon"), as Confederate States Secretary of War, appointing James Barr colonel of the 10th Mississippi Regiment. Richmond, VA, 30 October 1863.
1p, 7 3/4 x 10 in., on "Confederate States of America, War Department" letterhead, scattered ink marks, slight discoloration, creasing at folds, framed, 17 x 19 in. Seddon appoints James Barr (1829-1864) a colonel in the 10th Mississippi Regiment. Notation lower left in red, "From Gen'l Bragg."
James Seddon served as the fourth Confederate States Secretary of War from November 1862 through January 1865.
James Barr, Jr. enlisted on 5/21/1861 as a captain and was commissioned into Company A, 10th Mississippi Infantry. He was promoted major, lieutenant colonel, then colonel. Barr was mortally wounded during operations around Kennesaw Mountain/Marietta, GA, in July 1864, and died at the hospital at Marietta on 7/25/1864. He is buried at Greenwood Cemetery, Jackson, MS.
