Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Two report books identified to the Maryland 1st Potomac Home Brigade Regiment and 2nd Maryland Infantry.

Folio (10 1/2 x 14 1/2 in.). Leather-Covered boards, label affixed to front cover with "Company Morning Reports" in gilt, "Company D" written above (significant loss to cover and spine). Front free endpaper inscribed, "Chas. H. Baugher, ___ 1st Md. Regt. P.H.B.," with "Company D" and "Camp Baugher" written below. Additional inscription on front pastedown identifies the location as "Camp Baugher near Knoxville, Frederick Co., Md., Aug. 21st, 1862." Contains double-page printed report forms, followed by double-page blank pages to record explanations for alterations in the month's report (some water staining to margins, some pages partially loose, edge and corner wear). Entries date from January - September 1862, kept by Captain C.H. Baugher. Approx. 26 pages filled out, including reports that range from single sentences to more detailed entries. 

Organized at Frederick, MD, 1861 for three years of service, the 1st Maryland Potomac Home Brigade saw action at a number of significant battles throughout the war, including Loudon Heights, Harpers Ferry, Gettysburg, and the pursuit of Lee. Charles Baugher enlisted as a first lieutenant on 8/20/1861 and was commissioned into Company D, Co.  1st MD PHB Infantry.  He was promoted captain 9/18/1861, and mustered out on 9/30/1864. 

[With:] Folio (10 1/2 x 15 1/2 in.). Leather covered boards, label affixed to front cover with "Company Descriptive Book" in gilt (heavy wear and some areas of loss near edges). Contains double-page printed forms for keeping various records, including "List of Non-Commissioned Officers," "Register of Men Transferred," "Register of Men Discharged," "Register of Deaths," "Register of Deserters,"  "Descriptive Roll of Company, " which is identified to Co. F, 2nd Maryland (significant wear to contents, including water staining impacting some entries, soiling, surface residue, wear and loss to edges, some pages loose). Approx. 25 pages filled out, including reports that range from single sentences to more detailed entries. At least 2 soldiers are identified as being killed in action at Antietam (John Frazier, Malcolm Wilson), and several are identified as missing in action or killed in action at Petersburg. A number of "Substitutes" and "Deserters" are listed as well.

The 2nd Maryland Infantry was organized in Baltimore between June and September 1861 for three years of service. During its service, the regiment participated in the battles of the second Bull Run, Chantilly, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Spottsylvania, Totopotomy, Cold Harbor, around Petersburg, and was at the surrender of Lee's army at Appomattox.
