Following the launch of Confederate General John Hunt Morgan's raid into Ohio and Indiana on 2 July 1863, multiple companies of home guards were organized under the militia laws of the state of Ohio. By the 18th of July, Morgan's men had reached Buffington Ford, about 40 miles south of Marietta, in eastern Ohio. Captain Elias Dunlap Smith (1838-1912) served with the Ohio militia, and along with hundreds of others answered the call to protect southeast Ohio from Morgan's raiders. HDS indicates that Smith enlisted on 9/3/1864 in Co. F, 179th Ohio Infantry, and was mustered out on 6/17/1865.
