Lot Description
[FLAGS]. 44-star American flag. Ca 1891-1896.
45 x 66 in. wool flag with 44 machine-sewn, double-appliquéd cotton stars configured in 8/7/7/7/7/8 horizontal rows (some holes and areas of separation throughout, including one repaired area near lower portion of canton, occasional soiling/spotting, toning). Hoist is cotton, with 2 brass grommets. Hoist is inscribed "G.D. Smith."
Wyoming was admitted as the 44th state on 10 July 1890. When a new state was admitted, the new US flag containing the star for that state did not become official until the following 4th of July. Since Wyoming was admitted 6 days too late, the 44-star flag did not become official until 4 July 1891, and remained the official US flag for five years until the official adoption of the flag bearing the 45th star for Utah.
