CHOATE, John N. (1848-1902), photographer. Boudoir card of a class of female students with their teacher at Carlisle Indian School. Carlisle, PA, n.d.
Approx. 8 1/8 x 5 3/4 in. boudoir photograph on cardstock mount (light toning, soiling, and wear to mount edges and corners); framed to approx. 16 x 12 1/2 in. (not examined out of frame). Mount recto blindstamped "Choate" to lower left and "Carlisle, Pa." to lower right. Images features 19 female students arranged in rows, with a white woman who is most likely their teacher standing at the back. The group is posed outdoors on school grounds. One student holds a book open on her lap and another student holds a fan.
John N. Choate (1848-1902) began a long photographic career at Carlisle, Pennsylvania in 1879 when the famous Carlisle Indian Industrial School was founded.
