[CIVIL WAR]. 2 CDVs of Gen. Franklin S. NICKERSON & Lt. Nathaniel BOWDITCH, DOW at Kelly's Ford.
CDV, standing portrait of Franklin S. Nickerson. Philadelphia, PA: McClees, n.d. Detailed inscription on verso identifying the subject as "Gen. F.S. Nickerson...who entered the Civil War as a private and came out a Major General," with family history detailed below (toning, some soiling, surface residue, wear to mount). Nickerson was born in Swanville, ME. He was educated at the East Corinth academy and was a collector of customs at the beginning of the Civil war. He resigned his office to become major in the 4th Maine infantry, 15 June 1861. He was promoted lieutenant-colonel of his regiment, 9 Sept., colonel 25 Nov., and on 29 Nov. 1862, was commissioned brigadier-general of volunteers. He was specially mentioned by Gen. O.O. Howard for his bravery at Bull Run. After becoming colonel of his regiment he was sent to New Orleans, under Gen. Benjamin F. Butler, and was specially mentioned for his services at Baton Rouge. After receiving his commission as brigadier-general Gen. Nickerson served in the Department of the Gulf during the remainder of the war, and on 13 May 1865, resigned his commission and took up his residence in Boston, Massachusetts.
[With:] CDV, shoulder-length portrait of Nathaniel Bowditch. Washington, DC, and New York: Brady, n.d. Period inscription on verso identifying the subject as "Nathl. Bowditch, 2d Lieut. First Mass. Cavalry...Promoted to Adjutant of the Brigade and fell while leading a Cavalry charge at Kelley [sic] Ford Va. Mar. 17 1863 - Died in the care of First Mass. Cavalry Mar. 18" (light edge wear to mount, otherwise very good). Bowditch enlisted with the 1st Massachusetts Cavalry in November 1861 as a second lieutenant and was promoted in October 1862 to first lieutenant. As per HDS, he died of wounds on 19 March 1863, although the inscription notes he died a day earlier as a result of the wounds he received at Kelly's Ford, VA.
