Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. A group of post mortem portraits of babies and toddlers.
Sixth plate daguerreotype portrait of a young child resting on a white pillow or cushion, holding a tinted bouquet of flowers on his/her chest. The child's cheeks are lightly tinted pink. (Light tarnishing along edge, with spotting throughout, some weeping; resealed.) Housed in a fully separated leatherette case (split at spine). -- Sixth plate daguerreotype portrait of a mother holding her young child up on her lap with one arm. The child's eyes are closed, mouth slightly open. (Significant tarnishing along edge, bit of image deterioration in places, no preserver present; resealed.) Housed in a half pressed paper case). -- Ninth plate daguerreotype portrait featuring a reclining child in a red dress being visibly supported by the hands of an unseen subject. The child's eyes are just barely open, mouth is open. A note on the new seal indicates that the mother's face is visible in the upper margin of the image, hidden by the mat. (Halo effect to outer edge, rubbed image plate, no preserver present; resealed.) Housed in a pressed paper case. -- And a sixth plate ambrotype pair including a portrait of a living child and a portrait of what appears to be the same child, possibly deceased. Housed together in a figural Union case (non-functioning closure, chips). -- Together, 5 portraits including 4 likely post mortem portraits of infants and toddlers.
