Lot Description
[LINCOLN, Abraham (1809-1865)]. Autographs of Lincoln friends and associates, including:
DOUGLAS, Stephen A. (1813-1861). Autograph letter signed ("S.A. Douglas"), as U.S. Senator from Illinois, to U.S. Senator from Michigan Lewis Cass. Springfield [Illinois], 12 September 1856. 2pp, 9 1/2 in x 7 3/4 in. (some toning, creasing at folds). Docketed on verso. Douglas has just arrived in Springfield and writes while in the midst of the 1856 Presidential campaign in which Democratic candidate James Buchanan faced John C. Fremont, the first Republican Party nominee. Douglas implores Cass to attend a meeting there as rumors have swirled in the city that Cass will be present and "the people will all come to see you."
HERNDON, William Henry (1818-1891). Lincoln's law partner, friend, political supporter, and biographer. Autograph document signed ("Herndon & Zane"), 4pp, 8 x 12 in. (light soil, creasing, small tears, adhesive repair) Docketed on verso. "Filed May 20 1863."
