Grant is shown seated in his favorite chair, reading a newspaper, and wearing a top hat, the day he completed his Memoirs of the Civil War. This image, taken four days before Grant's death, is from a series of views documenting Grant's final days by J.G. Gilman (1839-1895), a longtime and active photographer in Canajoharie and Palatine Bridge, NY.
