Doubleday, ca 1885 (light edge wear to mount, some residue on verso). Grant is shown seated at center, flanked by Ulysses S. Grant Jr., Julia Dent Grant, Nellie Grant Sartoris, Frederick Dent Grant, Jesse Grant, with other family members seated below on the porch. Possibly the only complete photo of the Grant family ever taken, this image was shot on 19 June 1885, three days after Grant had arrived via a special train aboard Cornelius Vanderbilt's private rail car as he raced to finish writing his memoirs. -- Last Photograph of Gen. Grant, Four Days Before Death. Mt. McGregor  & Canajoharie, NY: Gilman, 22 July 1885. 5 1/2 x 3 3/4 in. cabinet photograph on cardstock mount (toning, staining). Grant is shown seated in his favorite chair, reading a newspaper, and wearing a top hat, the day he completed his Memoirs of the Civil War. This image, taken four days before Grant's death, is from a series of views documenting Grant's final days by J.G. Gilman (1839-1895), a longtime and active photographer in Canajoharie and Palatine Bridge, NY.
