3 cabinet cards featuring Sioux Chief Iron Wing, Mandan Chief Poor Wolf, and Ute Chief Ouray with wife Chipeta. [Carlisle, PA], ca 1880.
Studio portrait of Mandan Chief Poor Wolf wearing eye glasses, a fringed hide shirt, moccasins, and holding a tobacco bag. Verso with printed list of captions for other Carlisle images by Choate. -- Studio portrait of Sioux Chief Iron Wing wearing a beaded vest and blanket, and 2 upright feathers in his hair, and cradling a pipe in the crook of his arm. Verso with Choate's imprint and ink inscription reading, "No 24. Iron Wing. Sioux Chief." -- Studio portrait of Ute Chief Ouray and his wife Chipeta, seated next to one another wearing fringed garments. -- Together, 3 cabinet cards (toning to images; soiling and wear to mount edges and corners); each framed to approx. 12 x 14 in. (not examined out of the frame).
John N. Choate (1848-1902) began a long photographic career at Carlisle, Pennsylvania in 1879 when the famous Carlisle Indian Industrial School was founded. According to newspaper reports, Chiefs Man-on-the-Cloud and Mad Wolf visited the school in September of 1880.
