8vo. Original green cloth gilt (a few tiny stains); publisher’s dust jacket (some edgewear, light chipping to spine panel head).
FIRST EDITION of Cain’s story of social inequity in America, which follows the trajectory of a middle-class divorcee with two children during the Great Depression. The novel was Cain’s first effort to write in the third-person narrative form, and was adapted for a 1945 film directed by Michael Curtiz and starring Joan Crawford, Jack Carson and Zachary Scott.
