A Silkwork Embroidered Picture of a Landscape with Woman Sleeping, 19th Century
Auburn, New York, Circa 1813
silk threads and watercolor on silk ground.
attributed to Catherine Comstock by her great-granddaughter on verso, with inscribed verse Oft may the spirits of the dead descend / To watch the silent slumber of a friend.
11 1/4 x 12 1/2 inches.
According to genealogical records, Catherine Hall Comstock was born to Samuel and Abigail Hubbell Hall on June 22, 1796 in Stratford, Connecticut. She married Jared Comstock (1792-1865) on July 1, 1819 in Farmington, New York, and the couple had at least nine children, including Elizabeth Comstock Steere (1824-1908), referenced in the verso inscription. The Comstock family relocated to Michigan in the mid-1820s, and Catherine died in Palmyra, Michigan in 1880.
