.38 Colt CF. 7.5" round barrel. SN: 2916. Blued and color casehardened finish, brass backstrap and triggerguard, one-piece walnut grip. Single action cartridge conversion of a Colt Model 1861 Navy percussion revolver, with a six chambered smooth round cylinder. Barrel marked in a single line - ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA - with the lower left side of the frame marked with the two-date in two-line 1871 and 1872 patent information. Matching visible numbers except the cylinder, which is common on these alterations, with the cylinder renumbered 916 on its rear face to match the gun. Wedge unnumbered, grip matching. Cylinder with some of the naval scene still visible. Rear sight notch in nose of hammer, German silver front sight blade. Richards-Mason ejector rod, alteration breech plate and loading gate. Only about 2,200 Model 1861 Navy revolvers were altered to cartridge by the Richards-Mason system at Colt in the mid-1870s making them fairly scarce. This one appears to be an actual alteration, rather than a gun made up from unassembled parts since the cylinder was renumbered as part of the alteration process.
