Contemporary Snaphance Rifle with Heavily Decorated Inlays by John B. Derrick (American, b.1936)
.40 caliber. 31" octagonal barrel length. SN: NSN. Bare metal finish. Full length walnut stock with carved neoclassical molding around upper tang. Snaphance action rifle with neoclassical two leaf folding notch rear sight and brass blade front sight. Item features sling swivels and a patchbox on right side. Stock is heavily decorated with carved elk horn panels showing various scenes of animals, hunters, mythological creatures, and allegories including Diana the Huntress. Along with elk horn are additional ebony and horn inlays showing compass and yin-yang designs. Triggerguard is cast brass in the form of a nude. Included with item is a wood ramrod with carved elk horn tip and attachment in patchbox.
