.58 caliber. 40" barrel length. SN: NSN. Bright steel finish to all metal parts with a full length walnut stock with three screw tensioned barrel bands. Single shot percussion rifle featuring the correct pattern of Model 1861 musket rear sight and combination front sight/bayonet lug. The lock plate is struck U.S./COLT'S PT F.A. MFG CO/HARTFORD, CT forward of the hammer and dated 1862 behind the hammer. The barrel is dated 1862, and the barrel features a monogram VP proof to the upper left barrel flat and N.J mark followed by STEEL on the left barrel flat. An {Eagle} has been struck onto the right flat of the bolster. The counter pane is likewise marked N.J, and the buttstock tang shows the U.S. marking. All three barrel bands are U stamped, and the item features a two piece triggerguard with an attached sling swivel.
Good to Fine. Bore is Bright with strong rifling throughout. The finish on the rear barrel shows signs of buffing with scattered light pitting on the rear barrel and around the nipple that has been cleaned to a gray patina within the pits. Some flecks of gray patina forming on the right flank of the hammer. The screw heads show some deforamations along with signs of further polishing. The stock has scattered handling wear, dings, and mars overall, particularly on the counterpane of the stock. The upper edges of the handguard show rounding indicating the stock was sanded and refinished. The action is functional with a strong spring.
