.31 caliber. 6" octagonal barrel. SN: 157474 (mfg. ca.1859). Blued and color casehardened finish, silver plated backstrap and large brass triggerguard, one piece walnut grip. Single action percussion revolver with five-chambered smooth round cylinder, hammer nose notch rear sight and post front sight with old filled dovetail notch to its rear. Two-line bracketed barrel address reads: {ADDRESS SAML COLT/NEW YORK CITY}. Standard stage-coach hold up scene on cylinder with usual COLT'S PATENT mark and serial number, lower left of frame with two-line COLT'S/PATENT mark. Matching serial numbers throughout except for the wedge, which is an unnumbered replacement and the cylinder arbor which is not numbered either. Bottom of grip is engraved George Ivers. A search of www.civilwardata.com reveals that two "George Ivers" fought in the Civil War, both in the Regular Army. One was a private in Company A of the 7th US Infantry and one with the middle initial "H" who served in Company A 1st Battalion US Engineers. Further research may prove fruitful.
