Contemporary Franco-German Snaphaunce Rifle with Venus Motifs
John B. Derrick (American, b.1936)

.50 caliber. 31" octagonal barrel length. SN: NSN. Bright metal finish. Full length walnut stock has a large roman curve style butt and forearm carved with incised lines to both sides. Snaphance action rifle with two leaf folding notch rear sight and brass blade front sight. Stock is heavily decorated with carved elk horn panels depicting hunting scenes, a funeral procession showing animals carrying a hunter, and other grotesque figures. Bottom edge of stock features carved elk horn fittings that appear to be allegorical scenes involving Venus and Cupid. Right side of stock has a neoclassical elk horn fitting carved JD/Fecit. Ferrules are carved elk horn. Triggerguard is cast brass in the neoclassical style. Buttplate is also cast brass showing animal and grotesque motifs. Lock is a "Bourgeois" style adapted to snaphance from the Rifle Shoppe. Included with item is a wood ramrod with carved elk horn tip.
