President Havel was the last President of Czechoslovakia and the first President of the Czech Republic. President Havel and Secretary Albright met in 1989 when she visited Czechoslovakia with a delegation from the National Democratic Institute, and they remained close friends. While eulogizing President Havel, Secretary Albright said: “He cast light into places of deepest darkness and reminded us constantly of our obligations to one another” (Referenced by President Biden, 27 April 2022).
