Lot Description
[POLITICS -- LINCOLN]. CDV of a Sanitary Fair booth with numerous barrels, farm implements, and political banners for BLAIR and LINCOLN on display. St. Louis, MO: Scholten, ca 1860s.
CDV on cardstock mount (some soiling and discoloration to print; mount with soiling, discoloration, and minor wear to edges and corners). Mount recto bears Scholten's St. Louis imprint; verso blank. Accompanied by an uncut copy of an Address to the Democracy and the People o the United States, by the National Democratic Executive Committee. Washington: M'Gill & Witherow, Printers, 1860, in which the CDV was discovered by the consignor.

Likely captured at the May 1864 Mississippi Valley Sanitary Fair in St. Louis, Missouri, this image shows three men posed centrally, sitting and standing in front of rows of barrels in what appears to be a large barn-like building clad with wooden slats. Patriotic bunting and decorations fill the walls and hang from the ceiling, including banners reading "[B]lair" and "Linco[ln]." In the left foreground rests a plow and what appear to be other farming implements.

RARE: We could locate no other examples of this particular image.
