Lot Description
[POLITICS - EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. WARREN, Henry F., photog. Albumen photograph of the White House. Waltham, MA, ca 1865
7 1/2 x 5 3/8 in. albumen photograph on cardstock mount (puncture to upper portion just above building, spotting to print; soiling and staining to mount). Titled in ink beneath print, "White House South Front," along with printed credit to Warren and series title, "Views of Public Buildings in Washington, D. C., March 6, 1865.
Henry F. Warren is probably best known for capturing the last living photograph of President Lincoln. According to Hamilton and Ostendorf's Lincoln in Photographs, Warren used Lincoln's son, Tad, to coax the President out of the White House just two days after his second inauguration, on 6 March 1865. Warren made three negatives of Lincoln that day on the south balcony of the White House. The date of the image featured in this lot is also 6 March 1865, meaning that he likely captured it before or after his impromptu session with the President.
