Lot Description
[FLAGS & PATRIOTIC TEXTILES - HARRISON, Benjamin (1833-1901)]. "Welcome President Harrison" parade flag. Ca 1889-1890.
12 x 17 in. cotton parade flag in red, white, and blue, canton comprised of 42 printed stars configured in 7/7/7/7/7/7 horizontal rows (some toning, few scattered spots, few holes/areas of separation near lower right corner, slightly frayed edges). Legend printed in black: "Welcome President Harrison."
The 42-star flag was never official. Five stars were added on 4 July 1890: North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Washington (42nd state November 1889) and Idaho (3 July 1890). Very likely many of these were made to celebrate Washington's statehood, not knowing that Idaho would be admitted at the last minute. This is a rare example that also celebrates a visit from President Benjamin Harrison.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
