Lot Description
ROOSEVELT, THEODORE (1858-1919). Military appointment signed ("Theodore Roosevelt") as President. Washington, DC, 23 December 1908.
13 1/4 x 19 3/8 in. Light creasing to old folds, toning, minor wear to edges. Embossed seal affixed to lower left. Countersigned by Robert Shaw Oliver as Acting Secretary of War.

Appoints John Taylor Bottomley to the rank of first lieutenant in the Medical Reserve Corps of the Army of the United States to rank from 5 July 1908.

John Taylor Bottomley (1869-1925) graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1894. He served as an assistant surgeon on the Bay State Hospital Ship during the Spanish-American War, and thereafter in various surgical capacities at Boston City Hospital from 1899-1903. He then took a position as Surgeon in Chief at Carney Hospital, where he worked from 1903. When the United States entered World War I, he was serving as a captain in the Medical Reserve Corps, and was called to active duty on 10 May 1918. He was appointed president of the Examining Board for Officers in Boston, and was discharged in November of 1918.
