[NATIVE AMERICANS]. [BELL, Charles Milton (1848-1893)]. Chief On-a-wat (Can't Do It) - Mesquakie. [Washington, DC, ca 1879-1880]

9 7/8 x 16 1/2 in. albumen photograph on 10 1/2 x 17 in. cardstock mount (toning; edge and corner wear to mount).

Full length studio portrait of On-a-wat standing before an illustrated backdrop with cane in hand, wearing a combination of western and traditional clothing including otter fur turban, porcupine hair roach with eagle feather, grizzly bear claw necklace, shell and bead necklaces, German silver armbands, and bead embroidered leggings and moccasins.
