Lot Description
[NATIVE AMERICANS]. [HAYNES, F. Jay (1853-1921), photographer]. Large format albumen photograph of Ashishishe, or Curley. Dakota Territory, 1883.
12 x 8 in. albumen photograph mounted on heavy cardstock (light toning to perimeter and slight wear from original frame incl. small chip to top right corner, print trimmed to borders, overall nearly fine and quite attractive). An uncredited photograph taken by F. Jay Haynes, who was the official photographer for the Northern Pacific Railroad Company and Yellowstone National Park. Haynes took a series of photographs of the Crow in 1883, including this picture of Ashishishe. The portrait was likely taken at the last spike ceremony of the Northern Pacific Railroad.
