Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Naval rating badges, buttons, equipment, and CDVs.
A group of 15 items, comprising:
4 naval rating badges stenciled on cloth, ranging in size from 4 x 2 1/2 in. to 4 x 3 3/4 in. (toning, some soiling, some fraying to edges). Includes badges for Master at Arms, Coxswains & Boatswains Mates, Signal Quartermaster & Quartermaster, and Machinist. -- 3 buttons, including USN enlisted men's button marked by Novelty Rubber Co., Goodyear's Patent, 1851, New York (surface wear), and pair of officer's gilt coat and cuff buttons, each marked by Scovill Mfg. Co. -- Leather covered club, approx. 17 in. long, with modern typed label furnished by Carroll J. Delery III identifying the object as a "sailor's club," possibly dating from the late 18th century, although this cannot be confirmed (surface wear, including separation to leather near bottom of club). -- Pair of binoculars produced by Joseph Rodenstock, Berlin, ca early 20th century (surface wear).

Fredricks & Co., 1861. -- CDV, portrait of 2 US Naval Academy midshipmen, one identified on verso as "Arthur." US Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD: Chase and Bachrach. Imprint of the US Naval Academy on verso (fading, toning, some soiling). -- 2 unmounted albumen photographs, each approx. 3 x 2 3/4 in., with penciled captions on verso. The first image shows Fort Sumter, including debris shot and shells. The second image shows the northeast angle of Fort Marshall, Sullivan Island, Charleston Harbor, SC. -- Member's ribbon for combined encampment, Department of Michigan, Lansing, June 1924.
