[CIVIL WAR]. A group of fractional currency, patriotic covers, & 19th century notes and covers.

The lot is comprised of the following:

Approx. 17 pieces of Civil War fractional currency, including: Seven (7) 5 cent notes, each Second Issue. -- One (1) 3 cent note, Third Issue. -- Seven (7) 10 cent notes, including Second and Fourth Issues. -- Two (2) 25 cent notes. Fractional currency, also referred to as shinplasters, was introduced by the US federal government due to the coin shortage during the Civil War. 

[With:] One (1) 1 dollar Confederate States of America note, 6 April 1864. -- "Canal & Banking Co." notes, including 2 sheets comprised of four 5 dollar notes, one sheet comprised of four 20 dollar notes, and 3 sheets comprised of two 20 dollar notes. -- "Canal Bank" notes, including one sheet comprised of four 50 dollar notes, and one sheet comprised of four 20 dollar notes.

[With:] 10 Civil War-period illustrated patriotic covers, highlighted by a cover featuring vignettes showing the Battle of Lexington in 1775 and the Baltimore riot in 1861, a vignette entitled "Baltimore Quiet" showing a Union cannon aimed at a southern rioter who holds rocks, a vignette entitled "One of the F.F.V.'s after the Contraband" depicting Butler with an African American subject at his feet. -- 3 notes from the Cashier of Frederick-town Branch Bank (Maryland), dated 1835, 1837, and 1838 (paper affixed to reverse side of two notes). -- 2 Farmers' and Merchants' Bank notes (Middletown Point, NJ), dated 1862. -- New Orleans, Jackson & Great Northern Railroad Company $2 note. -- The Cochituate Bank $5 note (Boston, MA), dated 1852. -- The Washington County Bank $5 note (Maine), dated 1855. -- Adrian Insurance Company $1 note (Michigan). -- The Erie and Kalamazoo Railroad Bank $5 note, dated 1853.

Jones, Earlysville, Albermarle County, VA. -- 10 cent Thomas Jefferson Confederate States stamp, addressed to individual in Harrisonburg, Rockingham, VA. -- Two (2) 5 cent Jefferson Davis stamps, envelope addressed to Hattie Seaborn care of Major Seaborn, Pendleton, So. Ca. -- 10 cent Thomas Jefferson Confederate States stamp, addressed to Mr. Giles, Butler, GA. -- 10 cent postage, 9 June 1850, addressed to L.M. Freeman, Care of W. Freeman & Co., Nashville, TN. -- 3 cent postal issue, addressed to Baton Rouge, LA, with modern notation indicated cover to be "Steamboat 'Wild Wagner' tied. -- Assorted postage stamps.

Together, a collection of Civil War fractional currency, patriotic covers, various notes, and envelopes with war-date postage. Condition varies from fair to very good.
