[CIVIL WAR]. 75+ Southern and Confederate newspapers reporting on the war and politics of the era.

A collection comprised of more than 75 newspapers printed in the southeastern United States, dating from the 1830s-1860s. The newspapers contain reports involving politics and conflict in the years leading up to the Civil War, war-date developments, including battle reports, issues regarding abolition and enslavement, various advertisements including ads for enslaved persons and runaways, etc.

The majority of the newspapers date from the Civil War, with some exceptions. Highlighted issues include: The Charleston Mercury. 20 April 1864. Notice to slaveholders that labor is needed to build fortifications. Also included is an account of Fort Pillow. -- The Charleston Mercury. 5 November 1862. Advertisement for Confederate Army and Navy goods. -- Camden Daily Journal. 10 August 1864. Advertisements to hire African Americans, report of an African American woman that was taken to jail with a request for her owners to "take her away." -- New Orleans Daily Crescent. 5 September 1861. Lincoln writes to the governor of Kentucky on the neutrality of the state. -- Southern Illustrated News. 8 August 1863. Front page woodcut engravings of Mosby and John Pelham, with reports on Mosby and Pelham's death. -- The Daily Picayune. 19 August 1862. Printed while under the occupation of Union forces under Benjamin Butler. A special Tuesday afternoon edition in which Butler offers rewards for those who reported weapons being held by fellow citizens in the city. -- The Daily Picayune. 13 May 1862. Butler's order #25 dealing with the starving people of the city. -- 4 souvenir printings of the Vicksburg Daily Citizen, 3 of which are on wallpaper. -- And others.

Together, more than 75 newspapers. Condition good to poor, with toning, occasional soiling, chipping and loss, some areas of partial and full separation.
