[EARLY PHOTO]. Eclectic collection of photography, incl. cyclists, soldiers, & curious characters.
A group of approx. 125 photographs, including tintypes, CDVs, cabinet cards, stereoviews, real photo postcards, and large format photographs, ranging in size from 3 3/4 x 2 1/2 in. to 10 x 7 3/4 in. Approx. 70 postcards are enclosed, comprised of both real photo postcards and lithographed scenes. The collection contains portraits of individuals and groups, both formal and informal, landmarks, landscapes, animals, and artwork, ca mid-19th century through early 20th century. A combination of American and European photographs are included.
Several photographs are credited on the cardstock mount or in the negative. Identified photographers include: Nadar (Paris). -- Wyss (Paris). -- Disderi (Paris). -- Horne (Piqua, OH). -- Clark (Streator, IL) -- Elliott & Fry. -- And others.
Highlighted photographs include:
12 1/4 x 9 1/4 in. album page, obverse featuring a series of four (4) 5 1/2 x 4 in. albumen photographs showing a skeleton wearing a top hat in various poses, from riding a bicycle alone, riding bicycles with a gentleman, falling off his bicycle, and being carried away by two gentlemen. Reverse side of album page with 10 x 7 3/4 in. photograph showing the interior of the opera house in Paris, ca 1880s (toning to prints). -- 2 CDV-sized tintypes of young men with bicycles (creasing/bending to each). -- 3 cabinet cards of people of varying ages with bicycles, two of which are credited to photographers Dunklee (Athol, MA), and White (Vancouver, BC) (uncredited image with damage to lower edge of mount). -- CDV-sized tintype of two boys posed with their dog in a studio setting. -- 2 x 5 1/2 in. view of bones and other artifacts displayed on a table, modern sticker on verso identifies scene as "Pompei." -- 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 in. view of four people posed outside a wine shop, presumably in France. -- 4 French stereoviews, two of which show a young girl posed with her cat. Paris: Centralisation de Phorographies. -- 5 photographs, approx. 3 x 3 in., documenting a parade and other outdoor activities. Paris: Nadar (toning, spotting, some fading to prints). -- 2 cabinet cards of women and children, some in beachwear, some in dresses. Beuzeval-Houlgate (Nice): R. de Sauverzac. -- 3 memorial cards, each headed "In Loving Remembrance," with details about the deceased individuals. -- Cabinet card of flowers placed near a casket. Streator, IL: Clark. -- 4 1/4 x 2 3/4 in. album with gilt title, "Frankfurt a. Main," by C. Hertel, Mainz, containing 8 CDVs of landmarks and sculpture in Frankfurt (album incomplete, some views are on accordion-style mounts, one loose). -- 2 photographs of monkeys, the largest being 7 1/2 x 4 1/2 in., on cardstock mount, pencil signed at lower right, "Elliott & Fry," with additional imprint on mount verso (toning). -- And others.
Approx. 70 postcards are enclosed, including both real photo postcards and lithographed scenes from the United States, England, France, and Russia. Subjects include military views (approx. 20), from soldiers' portraits, camp life, drilling, and memorial scenes, ships, men standing in a flooded area, cyanotype of children near a horse-drawn wagon, cowboys, men aiming pistols at each other, people with their dogs, uniformed man with his bicycle, young African American child riding his tricycle, genre scenes, and more. Also enclosed is a French mechanical postcard featuring a portrait of a sailor, with a ship in the background.
Together, approx. 125 photographs, including tintypes, stereoviews, CDVs, cabinet cards, large format photographs, and real photo postcards. Condition varies from poor to very good, with toning, spotting, edge and corner wear throughout. Some mounts are trimmed.
