Lot Description
[COLONIAL]. WILLING, Charles (1710-1754) -- FOX, Charles James (1749-1806). Documents signed. 

WILLING, Charles (1710-1754). Partially printed document for an indentured servant signed (Ch. Willing") as Mayor of Philadelphia. The document states that Nicholas Bouthenot "in consideration of his freight 18 pounds paid by James Trotter" binds himself for a period of seven years to work for Trotter, who agrees to provide Bouthenot with sufficient meat, drink, apparel, washing, and lodging plus monthly freedom dues. Also signed by Trotter. 20 September 1754. 7 3/4 x 6 1/4 in. (folds, with some areas of separation to folds, light soiling). Charles Willing was an English-born merchant and politician who twice served as the mayor of Philadelphia, from 1748 until 1749 and again in 1754. Willing died weeks after signing this from a smallpox epidemic.

[With:] FOX, Charles James (1749-1806). Autograph letter signed ("C.J. Fox"). N.d. [1805]. Fox acknowledges receipt of a legacy gift left him by Lord Chedworth, who died in 1804, including a fine expression of appreciation of His Lordship's character. Approx. 8 3/4 x 7 in., within 10 3/4 x 7 1/4 in. sheet with "Anderson Auction Co." description affixed to lower margin. -- 10 x 7 1/2 in. engraving of Charles J. Fox. London: J. & F. Tallis. Fox was a British politician and statesman.
