Lot Description
[NEW YORK]. Broadside advertising the sale of land "on the Manor of Cortlandt," 13 May 1771.
7 x 9 3/4 in. (sight), framed to 15 1/4 x 12 1/4 in. (light creasing, scattered spotting, unexamined outside frame). Signed in type by William Bayard, Sr. (1729-1804) and Nicholas Bayard.
Advertising broadside announcing a public sale to be held "at the house of Samuel Merrit, Tavern-keeper, on the Manor of Courtlandt, about one Mile from the Croton-River." The property, totaling 1223 acres, was to be divided and sold into 10 lots. Courtlandt (present-day Cortlandt) Manor was named for the prominent Van Cortlandt family, which was awarded a Royal Charter of 86,000 acres in present-day Westchester County, ranging from the Hudson River to the Connecticut state line. Cortlandt Manor one of six manors which constituted Westchester County, New York, until the Revolutionary War.
