Lot Description
MORRIS, Robert (1734-1806). Document signed ("Robt. Morris") as Pres. of the North American Land Co.
Philadelphia, 16 March 1795.
One page, 12 1/2 x 9 3/4 in. bond of the North American Land Company made out to "Bird, Savage and Bird of London" for two shares. Scallop cut at left (chipping to edges, occasional spotting). Countersigned by James Marshall as Secretary.
Bird, Savage, and Bird was a firm of London merchants who exported manufactured goods to America in exchange for semi-tropical crops grown in locations such as South Carolina, beginning in 1782.
Founding Father Robert Morris, often called the "Financier of the American Revolution," and a signer of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution, was put in debtors' prison as a result of the North American Land Company venture, which collapsed in 1798.
[With:] Secretarially signed Thomas Mifflin (1744-1800) Land Office document.
