[TRANSPORTATION - SHIPS]. Collection of Trans-Atlantic mail, steamship freight bills. and checks.
Group of 50+ items, including:
3 folded letters written from England and mailed via trans-Atlantic sailing ship to New York, then to Baltimore. Red "SHIP" stamped with manuscript postage rate written on the cover, period 1821-1829. Red New York circular cancellation. -- Folded lettersheet for merchandise shipped from Glasgow, Scotland, to Philadelphia, PA, 4 April 1835, manuscript boat's name, red wax seal.
[With:] 3 freight bills, each with sailing ship vignette, including examples for the Sailing Ship Yazoo and example for the Sailing Ship Exacb, 1835-1836. -- 35+ freight bills, waybills, and other documents associated with steamships, some including ship vignettes, ca 1860s-1870s. Steamship lines include Steamships United States, Guiding Star, Morning Star, Evening Star, George Cromwell, St. James, Lafourche, Mabel Cameaux, and General Grant. -- Manuscript promissory note for interest in a steamer, Mobile, AL, 12 April 1845.
[With:] 12 "Steamboat Hermann" checks, each dated 1852, paying crew members. The Hermann was built in 1848 and weighed 194 tons, side wheel in design, she ran the Pittsburgh to St. Louis route and collided with the Emma Watts on 3 March 1853, ceased to be on the steamboat lists in 1857. Steamboat financial documentation dated prior to 1860 are rarely encountered.
[Also with:] Portion of Steamer Lafourche waybill displayed with illustrated advertisement clipped from New Orleans Times newspaper, framed, 12 x 15 1/4 in.
