Lock marked in three lines at the tail HARPERS/FERRY/1840 and with a {Spread Winged Eagle}/US forward of the hammer. Markings at breech and on the tang obscured by pitting. Stock counterpane with weak block letter AR/V and JAS inspections, for Adam Rhulman and James A Schaeffer, both Harpers Ferry inspectors. The musket was altered to percussion by the standard US military "cone in barrel" or "Belgian" system. The gun retains its brass blade front sight, both sling swivels and a correct button head ramrod.
