Springfield Model 1879 Trapdoor
.45-70 Government. 32.625" round barrel. SN: 258753 (mfg. ca1884). Blued and color casehardened finish, walnut stock. Single shot breechloading metallic cartridge military rifle. Lock marked U.S./SPRINGFIELD and with a {Spread-Winged Eagle} forward of the hammer. Breech block marked US/MODEL/1873. The breech is marked with a set of V/P/{Eagle Head}/P proof and inspection marks. No cartouche is present on the counterpane. The rifle has a low arch breech, three-click tumbler, two-piece triggerguard, grooved trigger with checkered tip, solid buttplate without implement door. The rifle is equipped with the 1879 pattern rear sight and the musket style combination front sight and socket bayonet lug. The gun retains both sling swivels and the stacking swivel, as well as the slotted cleaning rod.
