U.S. Springfield Model 1879 Trapdoor Carbine
Late Indian Wars
.45-70 Government. 22" barrel length. SN: 115183. Blued metal finish and case hardened finish to receiver. Wood stock has a plain straight grip and forearm with single barrel band. Breechloading rifle with M1879 carbine rear sight and blade front sight. Item features a low arch breech cover, three click tumbler, saddle bar and ring, serrated trigger, trapdoor buttplate, and two piece triggerguard. Markings include V/P/{eagle head} to top of barrel, US/MODEL/1873 to breech cover, and U.S./SPRINGFIELD preceded by spread eagle on lockplate. Heel of buttplate is marked US. Stock is marked with a 39 to comb, 39/G.H. to right side of butt, and a boxed SWP/1886 Samuel W. Porter inspector cartouche to left side of wrist. Bottom of wrist features circle P proof.
