** Pre-WWI Rock Island Arsenal U.S. Model 1903 Springfield
Manufactured 1913
.30-06. 24" barrel length. SN: 234305. Blued military finish. Walnut "S" stock has a plain straight grip and forearm, with single barrel band, hand grooves, early humpback handguard, and single cross bolt. Bolt action rifle with adjustable folding ladder notch rear sight (Rear sight base has parkerized finish, possibly added later) and blade front sight with sight cover. Item features a straight bolt, triple sling swivels, bayonet lug forend, checkered trapdoor buttplate with cleaning kit, gas release hole to right side of receiver, and an internal box magazine. Markings include U.S./ROCK ISLAND/ARSENAL/MODEL 1903/234305 with serifs to small lettering and not serial number. Barrel is marked RIA/{flaming bomb}/6-13 to top of barrel and C93/P to bottom of barrel. Floorplate has {flaming bomb}/NRA marks, and cut off switch is marked with serif letters. Stock is marked with a boxed CN/1913 Conrad Nelson inspector cartouche to left of wrist, and L/circle P proof to bottom of wrist. Includes a brown leather M1907 sling that appears to be marked P.T. and L-F&C/1913 in block letters.
This rifle has what is considered a "Low Number" receiver (under 800,000 for Springfield and 285,507 for Rock Island) which only received one heat treatment when manufactured. All such rifles are considered "collector's items" only and not "shooters" by the CMP. The CMP does not recommend firing any such rifle.
