Lot Description
Hollifield Army & Navy Practice Rod
25.5" long, 3" wide, and 1.25" tall. SN: NSN. WWI Era Hollifield rifle practice kit in original wooden case. Case features a varnished finish with pressed steel hinges and latches. Paper label glued to lid reads "Hollifield Army & Navy Rifle Rod/HOLLIFIELD TARGET PRACTICE ROD CO./MIDDLETOWN, NEW YORK" with patent dates "Oct. 8. 1907, Nov. 14. 1911' and Jan. 30. 1912". Interior lid fixed with a paper label featuring a cutaway of the device installed on a 1903 pattern rifle, instructions, and the spotting target. Case includes: one partial packet of targets with intact paper labels, envelope containing the "Aim Fixing Target Slip and Marking Discs on Staff", one 24" and one 21" long brass tube, one "U.S. C. CO." stamped dummy cartridge with internal spring and operating rod, and one target slip. Interior of box pasted with notes for instructors.

Condition Report
Good. All brass components show tarnish, with some handling mars and wear. The paper labels have yellowed, with the envelopes flaking away. A third of one side of the envelope for the marking disc on a staff has flaked. The outer flap for the target packet has broken off, with some flaking at the edges and oxidation on the staple holding them in place. The box has begun to separate at the corners, with scattered scratches and mars.
