Oklahoma Land Rush of 1889, Beautifully Painted First Piece of Tinware Made in Guthrie, OK
Tole painted tin cup with handle, ht. 3 in., commemorating the Oklahoma Land Rush of 1889, with text reading, "This cup was the first piece of tinware / made in Guthrie Oklahoma by Mr / James Deems of Hudson Mich Apr 22nd / 1889." Guthrie was nothing but a railroad supply station on the morning of April 22, 1889, but had a population of roughly 10,000 by the end of the day.
