Lot Description
Jefferson Davis CDV, Signed and Dated to his Imprisonment in Fort Monroe
CDV featuring a vignetted portrait of Jefferson Davis in civilian clothing, signed in ink, "Truly yours / Jefferson Davis," with Vannerson & Jones, Richmond, VA imprint on verso along with 2-cent revenue stamp struck with Vannerson & Jones handstamp and November 1865 date. Verso also bears modern penciled date, "11.8.1865." Davis was captured on May 10, 1865 by Union cavalrymen near Irwinville, Georgia, and imprisoned for two years at Fort Monroe in Virginia. Because of the restrictions on his visitors and communications, very little was written or signed while he was imprisoned.
