Lot Description

Rare Confederate Imprint, Prayers...for the Use of the Soldiers

Female Bible, Prayer-Book and Tract Society. Prayers and Other Devotions for the Use of the Soldiers of the Army of the Confederate States. Charleston (SC): Printed by Evans & Cogswell, n.d. (ca. 1861-1863). 4.25 x 7 in. in printed tan wraps, stitched spine, 12pp. Parrish & Willingham 8558. P & W only found two copies - Georgia State University and South Carolina Historical Society. WorldCat only lists one "downloadable archival material." We have only been able to locate six sales of this between 1918 and 2008.

This copy with previous owner's name on inside front wrap "CSA 1861 / Capt Marsh / 20th N.C." We have not located anyone by that name in the 20th NC, but there were Marshes in other North Carolina units. William T. Marsh of Bath, NC was a Captain in the Pamlico Rifles/4th NC Infy. (WIA Antietam, died 8 days later). The Palmer-Marsh house in Bath is a National Historic Landmark and museum today.) Edward Stanley Marsh rose to Captain of Co. I in the 4th NC Infy. (WIA Chancellorsville) Without at least a first initial, it is difficult to track down this "Capt. Marsh."

This lot is located in Cincinnati.
