Lot Description

Confederate Enrolling Notice Broadside from Clinton, Louisiana, 1864

Printed broadside, 5.125 x 9.5 in., Enrolling Notice. Clinton, LA: Enrolling Office, August 10, 1864. Inscribed "Official Wm. Boyd Lt. & En. Off. / At(?) Col. VD Walshes / near Laurel Hill" at bottom. Undersigned in print by "William Murray, / Capt. & En. Officer, 3d Con. Dist. East. La." and "Joseph W. Lesesne, Lieut. & Adjt." Notice reads, in part, "In obedience to Gen. Order, No. 12, Office Commandant Conscripts, Eastern Louisiana, all white persons who have been regularly discharged from the Army, or by Medical Examining Boards appointed for the examination of of Conscripts...and all persons who have hitherto been exempt by reason of having furnished substitutes, - also, all persons who claim exemption upon any grounds whatever, shall immediately report to the Enrolling Officer of their respeetive [sic] Parishes for enrollment, unless they have received a certificate or exemption from this Office or the Commandant." Below are listed the dates and locations of medical examinations for the volunteers and conscripts from the district, which will be performed by the Medical Examining Board. 

William Boyd and Joseph Lesesne both served as second lieutenants with the general staff for the Confederate States Army. From his inscription, Boyd likely signed this document at Rosemound Plantation, the home of Colonel Vincent David Walsh (1818-1899), in Laurel Hill, present-day St. Francisville, LA.
