Three Japanese Lacquered Covered Boxes, Kobako
Edo-Meiji Period
the first a flattened, circular gold and dark brown lacquered metal example, the cover decorated in red, gold with mother-of-pearl inlays depicting the hotei seated behind a large cloth bag; the second a cylindrical-form two-tiered gold and black lacquer example decorated with shells and aquatic plants, the interior lacquered red; the third a rectangular gold and red lacquer example, the cover decorated with a scholar riding a horse with his attendant in a landscape.
Height of tallest 3 in., 7.62 cm.
Condition Report
Each with surface scratches and rubbing. The hotei example with a chipped loss beneath the figure's back. The cylindrical example with a crack at the interior of the cover. The rectangular example bruised at the corners.
