Lot Description
A Rare Yixing 'Prunus Blossom' Coupe with Impressed Seal 'Mingyuan', and Wood Stand
Attributed to Chen Mingyuan
Elegantly modeled in fine persimmon-red clay as an open five-petaled blossom, the exterior with a single branch form handle with a realistically textured handle in the form of a gnarled branch with a hollow center, the cup's sides applied with yellow clay blossoms and buds, the underside the subtly undulating sepals are centered by the artist’s impressed seal 'Ming Yuan'; together with finely carved later hardwood stand in the form of an open prunus blossom and budding branch; both with later labels inscribed 'NL-6'.
Note:
The elegant Yixing stoneware (Zisha) tea wares and scholar's items attributed to Chen Mingyuan (fl. Late 17th – early 18th century) have acquired legendary status among connoisseurs of Chinese works of art. Surviving works worldwide may only number in the low hundreds, with a notable proportion preserved in the collections of the Shanghai Museum and the Museum of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Chen Minyuan was renowned for his trompe l’oeil scholar’s objects, with an exquisite attention to detail, delighting those who admire his technique and style.
This cup was formerly in the collection of Yixing wares assembled by Shanghai connoisseur Pang Yuanji (1864-1947). Pang, together with the artist Lu Hui (1851-1920), compiled a very rare two-volume set of rubbings and descriptions of Yixing teapots and scholar’s objects in Pang’s collection, probably during the period between 1910-1920. Ink rubbings and detailed descriptions of the present wine cup are included in the second volume, where a rhapsodic appreciation is appended which may be translated as: “In Midsummer, in a cool poolside pavilion, pouring wine into this cup, entertaining an honored guest, the refreshing essence shall gladden the hearts.”
