Lot of Two Japanese Tsubas with Handaka Sonja Motifs
1.) Iron tsuba with gold and shakudo inlays depicting Handaka Sonja. About 2.5" x 2.75" tsuba.
2.) Iron tsuba with gold, copper, and shakudo inlays depicting Handaka Sonja. About 3.25" diameter. Signed with mei to one side.
According to Buddhist mythology, Handaka Sonja is one of 16 revered disciples of Buddha, who is usually accompanied by a pet dragon, or seen collecting rain water in his alms bowl to summon and release the dragon.
Both items are housed in 4.5" x 4.75" x 1.25" wood boxes.
