Lot Description

8vo. Original light green cloth, decorated in blind and lettered in gilt (hinges loose); dust jacket (slight creasing and light soiling, minor marginal chipping). Provenance: Sylvia Asendorf (ca 1928-2017) Bay Area Bookseller (inscription from Wallace Stegner on the half-title).

FIRST EDITION (stated), INSCRIBED BY STEGNER TO ASENDORF: "For Sylvia Asendorf, who really doesn't need another! Wallace Stegner." Sylvia owned a bookstore in Los Altos, California, and associated with the Stegners, who were prominent citizens in Los Altos Hills. Stegner's novel, frequently quoting and based on Mary Hallock Foote's letters of the American West, won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1971.
