8vo. Color frontispiece by Juan Gris. (Some marginal toning.) Original black cloth gilt (slight wear to extremities, a touch of sunning to spine ends and staining to edges); dust jacket (panels separated with old cellotape repairs verso, chipped, some toning).

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE with Scribner's "A" and seal on copyright page. Published when Hemingway was in his early thirties and living in Key West, Death in the Afternoon "represents the author at his best, first as a writer and second as someone who was never satisfied with knowing only a little about his subject but who always dug deeply until he had both the essence and the smallest details" (Charles M.
