16 3/4 x 13 1/2 in. albumen photograph on 20 x 16 in. cardstock mount. Provenance: Christie's New York, 20 May 1994, The Jerome Shochet Collection of Manuscripts and Signed Photographs, lot 73.
An imperial-size albumen portrait of the geologist who first explored the Colorado and Green rivers (1869-1875), probably taken in later life while Powell was director of the Smithsonian Institution's Bureau of Ethnology. Signed: "Yours cordially / JW Powell" in lower margin of mount. An uncommon image.
